Design Technology – What Kinds of Skills will a Child Learn?

Design Technology, or DT, is a subject that is taught to children in UK schools and which they can select as one of their GCSE subjects if they would like to. It is a very creative subject and can teach children a lot of new skills. Here are some of the key skills a child can pick up:

  • Creativity. DT teaches children to think creatively and to think outside of the box. This can be applied to lots of other subjects, as well as other hobbies and interests outside of school.
  • Good behaviour. Children will be working with machines like saws and lasers, so they need to be trusted to behave. They will learn the importance of good behaviour and listen to instructions.
  • Project management. Children will be given the chance to see a project through from beginning to end. They will plan it out and track its progress, teaching them to manage time and to stay in control of an overall project.
